Upcycled Carpenter’s Plane Edison Table Lamp | #152
Bring a little workshop history into your home. This upcycled Edison table lamp pairs the mellow grain of a vintage beech carpenter’s plane with the warm glow of an exposed filament bulb. Its angled blade, wooden wedge and time-worn surface make it a distinctive accent for a sideboard, desk or cosy corner.
A carpenter’s tool with a new purpose
Lamp #152 has been created from a wooden smoothing plane made by John Moseley & Son, London. The Moseley maker’s mark remains visible on the toe of the beech body, alongside the stamped initials M. W., a personal trace of its previous working life.
This compact style is known as a “coffin” plane because of its shaped wooden body, wider through the middle and gently rounded. Originally designed to smooth smaller workpieces and work around obstructions, it now brings the character of traditional woodworking to your home.
Craftsmanship worth keeping
Established in 1730, the Moseley firm became a prolific producer of wooden planes. In the mid-1860s, Moseley & Son operated from Broad Street in Bloomsbury, London. William Marples acquired the business by 1892 and transferred plane-making to Sheffield; London operations had ceased by 1910. The blade in this plane was made by Fowler Smith and Co., a Sheffield edge-tool maker established in the late 1800s.
