Edison Timber Table Lamp - Wood plane series #46
This wooden table lamp has been created from an old carpenter's block plane with the addition of an edison light bulb to create gorgeous ambient lighting.
It has been crafted to reflect New Zealand’s commercial and agricultural history.
This unique lamp has the warmth of honey coloured beech wood.
The original carpenter's pane was made by Marples & Sons, a company establised in Sheffield, England in the mid 19th Century.
The Marples' brand, incorporating the Hibernia triple shamrock logo, is incorporated into the steel and still visible on the cutting blade.
It's impossible to know when the plane was brought to New Zealand, but tools like this were carefully looked after by their owners with many, like this one, bearing their initials - P. Stong - in the wood.
Table lamp details
- The dimensions of the lamp base are: length 21 cm, width 8 cm, height with bulb, 22 cm.
- 1.5 kg
The plane has been cleaned, lightly sanded to remove years of grime, and hand finished with natural beeswax.
I have tried to retain a sense of the history of the tool by leaving surface marks while cleaning and polishing the beautiful wood.
Each plane comes with a written history.
The vintage E27 40W screw fit Edison bulb, which comes with your lamp, has a life of about 1500 hours and can be easily changed for any number of similar bulbs that are easily available in New Zealand.
Each lamp is tagged and tested to ensure electrical safety. It has a long lead and an in-line switch.
We recommend a maximum 40W bulb.
Your Edison lamp has a felt pad on the base to protect any surface you choose to put it on.
