Edison Table Lamp - Wood plane series #22
Our Edison lamps combine recycled timber with edgy industrial materials, which reflect New Zealand’s commercial and agricultural history.
They'll enhance your room and stimulate discussion.
This Edison table lamp has been created from an old carpenter's wood block plane made by Marples & Sons a company established in Sheffield, England in the mid 19th Century and producing quality woodworking tools for over a hundred years.
Small wood planes of this design are called ’coffin’ planes because the body of the wood block resembles the shape of a coffin.
The Marples brand is incorporated into the steel and is still visible on the cutting blade
It's impossible to know when the plane was brought to New Zealand, but it has undoubtedly been cherished over the decades by its carpenter owner.
Long since retired, this tool has been rescued from its dusty resting place and brought back to life to create functional art.
- The dimensions of the lamp base are: length 20cm, width 8cm, height with bulb, 21cm.
The plane has been cleaned, lightly sanded to remove years of grime, and hand finished with natural beeswax.
Any marks and blemishes resulting from years of use have been retained to give a sense of the history of the tool and those who have used it.
Each plane comes with a written history.
The vintage E27 40W screw fit Edison bulb, which comes with your lamp, has a life of about 1500 hours and can be easily changed for any number of similar bulbs that are easily available in New Zealand.
Each lamp is tagged and tested to ensure electrical safety. It has a long lead and an in-line switch.
We recommend a maximum 40W bulb. Choose the size of bulb you'd like - the photos show a standard teardrop bulb and a smaller version.
Your Edison lamp has a felt pad on the base to protect any surface you choose to put it on.
