Edison Timber Table Lamp - Wood plane series #40
Our Edison lamps combine recycled timber with edgy industrial materials, which reflect New Zealand’s commercial and agricultural history.
They'll enhance your room and stimulate discussion.
This Edison table lamp has been created from an old carpenter's wood block plane made by Alex Mathieson & Sons, a company established in Glasgow, in the early 19th Century.
The Mathieson brand is incorporated into the steel and is still visible on the cutting blade.
The 'rhino horn' handle on this example is typical of a German or continental style of plane. Sometimes called a Bismark plane and named after the Prince Otto von Bismark, first Chancellor of a united Germany in the 19th Century.- The dimensions of the lamp base are: length 25 cm, width 6 cm, height with bulb, 20cm.
- 1 kg
The plane has been cleaned, lightly sanded to remove years of grime, and hand finished with natural beeswax.
I have tried to retain a sense of the history of the tool by leaving surface marks while cleaning and polishing the beautiful wood.
Each plane comes with a written history.
The vintage E27 40W screw fit Edison bulb, which comes with your lamp, has a life of about 1500 hours and can be easily changed for any number of similar bulbs that are easily available in New Zealand.
Each lamp is tagged and tested to ensure electrical safety. It has a long lead and an in-line switch.
We recommend a maximum 40W bulb.
Your Edison lamp has a felt pad on the base to protect any surface you choose to put it on.
