Embrace History: A 100-Year-Old Wood Plane Reborn as a Lamp

Imagine a lamp that whispers tales of a bygone era. This handcrafted beauty, meticulously restored from a genuine vintage wood plane, carries the legacy of generations of skilled artisans.

The gorgeous beech wood, etched with the marks of its past life, now cradles a warm Edison bulb, casting a soft glow that illuminates your space and ignites conversation.

It has been lovingly created from an old carpenter's wood plane made by Alex Mathieson & Son, a company established in Glasgow in the early 19th Century which produced fine edge tools for more than a hundred years.  

The Mathieson brand is incorporated into the steel of your plane and is still visible on the cutting blade. It is also just visible stamped into the front ‘toe’ of the wood block.

Small wood planes of this design are called ’coffin’ planes because the body of the wood block resembles the shape of a coffin

A written history accompanies each lamp, providing fascinating details about its origin. This lamp is more than just light; it's a conversation starter and a testament to enduring design.

The plane has been cleaned, lightly sanded to remove years of grime, and hand finished with natural beeswax.

The replica vintage E27 40W screw fit Edison bulb, which comes with your lamp, has a life of about 1500 hours and can be easily changed for any number of similar bulbs that are widely available in New Zealand.

Each lamp is independently tagged and tested. It has a long lead and an in-line switch.

We recommend a maximum 40W bulb.

Your Edison lamp has a felt pad on the base to protect any surface you choose to put it on.

Delivery

We have a $9.50 flat fee for delivery in the Wellington area, and a (free) click and collect service from Plimmerton, Wellington or Greytown, Wairarapa.

Delivery charges outside of Wellington will be calculated at check-out.

Deliveries to Australia may be subject to custom regulations regarding the importation of timber and are the responsibility of the purchaser.
