Shades at Grays’ wooden table lamps breathe new life in to a piece of New Zealand history and provide a distinctive light, not found in retail shops.

This lamp has been crafted from a vintage carpenter’s plane, restored with love - plus some elbow grease - and finished with natural bees wax and the addition of a replica edison bulb.

The gorgeous hues of the wood speak to the carpenters hands that once held this plane, shaping wood with skill and dedication – used way before power tools took over the task.

Its journey began in Glasgow, Scotland, a city known for its hard core tradies who worked in a tough industrial environment. It was manufactured by Alex Mathieson & Son, a company founded in the early 1800s  that produced quality woodworking tools for well over 100 years.

The legacy of their craftsmanship is imprinted in the steel, where the Mathieson brand is clearly visible.

The initials of the original owner H.E.T is also stamped in to the plane.

The beech block has been cleaned and polished with natural beeswax. As you run your fingers over its smooth surface, you're connected to generations of skilled artisans who contributed to its journey to New Zealand.

The heart of this lamp, its Edison bulb, emits a warm and inviting glow, casting a comforting ambiance in your space. It's more than just a source of light; it's a conversation starter, a piece of history, and a work of art all in one.

I have tried to retain a sense of the history of the tool by leaving surface marks while cleaning and polishing the beautiful beech wood.

Each plane comes with a written history.

The vintage E27 40W screw fit Edison bulb, which comes with your lamp, has a life of about 1500 hours and can be easily changed for any number of similar bulbs that are generally freely available in New Zealand.

Each lamp is tagged and tested to ensure electrical safety. It has a long lead and an in-line switch.

We recommend a maximum 40W bulb.

Your Edison lamp has a felt pad on the base to protect any surface you choose to put it on.

Delivery

We have a $7 flat fee for delivery in the Wellington area, and a (free) click and collect service from Plimmerton, Wellington.

Delivery charges outside of Wellington will be calculated at check-out.

Deliveries to Australia may be subject to custom regulations regarding the importation of timber and are the responsibility of the purchaser.
