Edison Table Lamp - Wood plane series #34
Our Edison lamps combine recycled timber with edgy industrial materials, which reflect New Zealand’s commercial and agricultural history.
They'll enhance your room and stimulate discussion.
This Edison table lamp has a gorgeous warmth of wood. It has been created from an old carpenter's wood block plane made by Alex Mathieson & Sons, a company established in Glasgow, in the early 19th Century.
It incorporates a cutting blade made by John Jowett, a toolmaker registered in Sheffield, England in the late 19th Century.
The Jowett brand is stamped into the steel and is still visible on the cutting blade. The Mathieson brand is stamped on the 'toe' of the wood block.
The original owner's name A.H. Tuttill is also visible.
Small wood planes of this design are called 'coffin' planes because the body of the wood block resembles the shape of a coffin.
- The dimensions of the lamp base are: length 21 cm, width 9 cm, height with bulb, 20cm.
- 1.2 kg
I have tried to retain a sense of the history of the tool by leaving surface marks while cleaning and polishing the beautiful beech wood.
Each plane comes with a written history.
The plane has been cleaned, lightly sanded to remove years of grime, and hand finished with natural beeswax.
The vintage E27 40W screw fit Edison bulb, which comes with your lamp, has a life of about 1500 hours and can be easily changed for any number of similar bulbs that are generally freely available in New Zealand.
Each lamp is tagged and tested. It has a long lead and an in-line switch.
We recommend a maximum 40W bulb.
Your Edison lamp has a felt pad on the base to protect any surface you choose to put it on.
